TOKYO 2020 RECAP
New Zealand's Emma Twigg won the gold medal in dominating fashion, breaking away from the field in the second 500 and winning by open water. Hanna Prakatsen of the Russian Olympic Federation overcame a sluggish start to take the silver with Austria's Magdalena Lobnig taking the bronze in a sprint finish over GBR, SUI, and CHN.
Watch the Olympic Final here, W1x final starts around 1:50:00.
2022 SEASON RECAP
The 2022 season has been dominated by Karolien Florijn of The Netherlands. Florijn, who won an Olympic silver medal last year in the Dutch women's four, has won every race she has competed in, World Cup I, World Cup II, and the European Championship.
Alexandra Foester of Germany has also had a great year, winning the U23 world title in August, as well as taking gold at World Cup III and bronze at Europeans. Additional multi-medalists this year have been Australia's Tara Rigney (3rd at WC2, and 2nd at WC3), and Jeanine Gmelin of Switzerland who took 2nd at WC2, 3rd at WC3, but had to withdraw from the European Championships after testing positive for COVID.
USA PROSPECTS
Kara Kohler is back in the single after trying out the double with Sophia Vitas at World Cup II, and winning bronze in Poznan. This will be Kara's eighth senior national team and she will be one of the most experienced scullers in the event, having won an Olympic bronze medal as part of the 2012 USA W4x, a Worlds bronze medal as the 2019 USA W1x, and as the current holder of the Princess Royal Challenge Cup, with her win in the W1x event at the 2022 Henley Royal Regatta. Kohler should have the speed and experience to make the A Final and be in contention for a medal in Racice.
MEDAL PICKS
New Zealand's Emma Twigg makes her 2022 debut following her Olympic win last year and will be a heavy favorite for a medal in what should be a wide open race. She will be joined by Florijn, Kohler, Foester, Gmelin, and Rigney as potential medalists.
Other scullers with shots to make the final are Great Britain's Hannah Scott, China's Shiyu Lu, Spain's Virginia Dias Rivas, Czech sculler Lenka Antosova, and Romanian lightweight Ionela Cozmiuc.
GOLD – NEW ZEALAND
SILVER – UNITED STATES
BRONZE - THE NETHERLANDS
